This cute, fun mini-book is perfect for young twins who love reading time and/or who are just learning to read on their own (ages 2-5 and for early readers). Written by Yavonne Field-Bagwell and wonderfully illustrated by Cathy Morrison, it's a quick read at just 13 pages of text and drawings but it teaches an important lesson to twins everywhere.
The book tells the true-life story of identical twins Quinton and Zachary Bagwell, who like to play games on friends and family by pretending to be each other. Quinton is always in red and Zachary is in blue, and that's the only way that most people can tell them apart. So the boys switch outfits and see if they can trick people into thinking Quinton is Zachary and vice-versa.
It works on most people but not mom who sees through the game right away. The boys are shocked - ' Quinton asked, "How'd you know it was me?" "Silly, silly boys," she said, "I'm your Mommy, you can't trick me!" '
We don't want to give away the ending, but suffice to say that mom explains to her boys how she can tell them apart. It's a moral that twins everywhere probably need to be reminded about, even those older twins who probably have stopped trying to trick people years ago.
We definitely recommend the book to young twins and parents of young twins everywhere. But we do have two small reservations. First, the book is kind of small so don't buy it expecting to be a weekend read (although younger twins will probably enjoy re-reading it several times). Secondly, the story and moral is written more towards identical twins than fraternal twins, and certainly to twins of the same sex who look alike. Fraternal twins who don't look similar will still enjoy the rhymes and illustrations, but might feel left out because they can't play the same switching games that Zachary and Quinton do.
Still, those are minor complaints and shouldn't detract anyone in the target audience from buying it. It's just $5.95 and is published by Twins Magazine. If you buy it and like it, be sure to send the author a note and tell her so!!!
